What is Sports Therapy?

Sports therapy is an aspect of healthcare that is specifically concearned with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of the patient back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sport specific fitness.

What is a Sports Therapist?

A graduate sports therapist is a practitioner who has the knowledge and ability to provide first aid and attend injuries in a recreational, training and competitive environment. They have the knowledge and ability to provide sports massage, to implement appropriate rehabilitation programmes and utilise sports and exercise principles to optimise injury prevention.

Sports Therapist Phil Smith from Physiohaus has a strong background in Triathlon where he has represented the Great Britain age group team at World Championships in Madeira 2004, Honolulu 2005 and European Championships in Lausanne 2005 and Lorient 2007. Phil has also competed at several Ironman events finishing his 1st Ironman in Austria 2004. He has placed 31st overall at Ironman UK 2008 and progressed to racing Ultra Endurance events including Ultra Trail Du Mont Blanc where he finished 163rd and 85th SEH and dabbling in double Ironman’s!

In addition Phil is a British Triathlon qualified coach, a Retul qualified Bike fitter and a CYQ qualified advanced fitness instructor and a former Royal Marine. He has worked alongside leading EIS strength and conditioning coaches, EIS Physiotherapists and leading consultants in Sports and exercise medicine.  As well as his work with TRI Phil works out of Physiohaus Jesmond and updates his own blog with his crazy adventures here: smithsdotri
